Master's Program

All students are expected to be familiar with the latest version of the graduate handbook. It covers general requirements, the supervisory committee for the program of study, course requirements, probation and dismissal, residence requirements, thesis and reports, and final examination. Requirements specified in the handbook supersede department requirements. An electronic copy of the Graduate Handbook is available on the Graduate School's website.

Graduate seminar

All on-campus graduate students are required to attend the departmental graduate seminar, and will be required to give a seminar presentation on their thesis or report. Their enrollment in the zero credit hour seminar course, ECE 896, is required each semester.

Graduate committee/program of study

During the first semester of graduate study, the student will choose a major adviser, select a graduate committee and develop a tentative plan of study for a graduate program in the Mike Wiegers Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The program of study must be completed and forwarded to the Graduate School by the end of the second semester of enrollment.

Choice of option

All options require at least 18 credit hours of the program of study to be at the 700 level or above. The student, with the concurrence of the major adviser and/or the department head, may select one of the options below leading to the master's degree. At the option of the major adviser, graduate research assistants may be required to select option one. For the course work option, identified programs of study for the major areas of specialization should be followed when available.

Thesis option:

30 hours of graduate credit including six credit hours of thesis research, ECE 899

Two courses are required from the following:

    • ECE 830 Advanced System Theory
    • ECE 840 Computer Engineering Methods for Analysis, Simulation, and Design I
    • ECE 841 Network Theory
    • ECE 861 Applied Probability Theory & Random Processes

For the thesis option, exclusive of thesis research, at least 15 hours must be taken in electrical and computer engineering. The remaining graduate courses should be prudently selected by the student in consultation with the student’s graduate committee. A poster that meets department guidelines will also be required.

Report option:

30 hours of graduate credit including two credit hours of report research, ECE 898

Two courses are required from the following:

    • ECE 830 Advanced System Theory
    • ECE 840 Computer Engineering Methods for Analysis, Simulation, and Design I
    • ECE 841 Network Theory
    • ECE 861 Applied Probability Theory & Random Processes

For the report option, exclusive of report research, at least 15 hours must be taken in electrical and computer engineering. The remaining graduate courses should be prudently selected by the student in consultation with the student’s graduate committee.

Course work option:

30 hours of graduate credit

Two courses are required from the following:

    • ECE 830 Advanced System Theory
    • ECE 840 Computer Engineering Methods for Analysis, Simulation, and Design I
    • ECE 841 Network Theory
    • ECE 861 Applied Probability Theory & Random Processes

A minimum of 12 additional hours of graduate level ECE courses are required for all students including six hours of laboratory courses. Students entering from an ABET accredited program or with sufficient practical engineering experience may have this requirement waived. The remaining 12 hours may be selected from ECE graduate courses or other supporting areas as determined by the student’s supervisory committee.

Final examination

The request for final examination must be filed in accordance with the requirements of the graduate school.
