Message from the Department HeadPortrait of Samee Khan

Welcome to the Tim Taylor Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kansas State University!

It is with great pride and excitement that I begin my tenure as department head of electrical and computer engineering at Kansas State University. I am continually inspired by the strong foundation laid since our founding in 1899 and the rich legacy of those who came before us.

Our vision for K-State ECE is to be a globally recognized leader in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and biomedical engineering education and research. We aim to empower the next generation of innovators to solve complex societal challenges and drive technological advancement.

To achieve this, our mission is clear:

  • Provide a rigorous, hands-on and innovative educational experience that prepares students for impactful careers.
  • Conduct transformative research that advances the frontiers of electrical, computer and biomedical engineering.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that promotes lifelong learning and contributes to the well-being of society.

We believe that faculty excellence is the cornerstone of strong academic programs. Our department is home to exceptional educators and researchers, including those holding endowed chairs and professorships, IEEE fellows, a Jefferson Science fellow and early-career research awardees. Their dedication and commitment ensure our students learn from leaders at the forefront of their fields, engaging in cutting-edge research and benefiting from world-class mentorship. Our departmental research spans a wide range of areas, from power systems and control to computer architecture and bioinformatics, providing students with a comprehensive learning experience.

A hallmark of our undergraduate programs is the integration of extensive hands-on laboratory experiences. Understanding practical applications of mathematically grounded theoretical foundations is essential for mastering complex concepts, and all our students are required to participate in lab-based courses. This provides unparalleled preparation, enabling our graduates to contribute immediately and make a significant impact. Our comprehensive curriculum covers the full breadth of electrical, computer and biomedical engineering, and our graduates are highly sought after by employers.

We invite you to explore our department, learn more about our programs and discover the exciting opportunities that await you at Kansas State University. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or to schedule an on-campus visit. We look forward to connecting with you!

Sincerely,

Samee Khan, Ph.D.
