The fourth-place collegiate finalist was the Kansas State University team of Tyler O’Briant, senior in electrical engineering, Tonganoxie, and Sam Rozell, senior in electrical engineering,Manhattan. The team’s pitch for Eyas, a drone system designed for use by law enforcement and emergency management personnel, was awarded $2,500.

This year the college of engineering schedule photos of research groups, had an Awards ceremony, provided snacks and gifts during an open house with Associate Dean Noel Schultz, offered fun photos of groups of students through a photo booth, and had an ice cream social.

Eddie Weigle, founder of Big Head Endian, visits one of the websites related to his Mars rover work. Weigle also had a large involvement in the success of the Ralph instrument on the New Horizons voyage to Pluto. Weigle is a graduate of KSU ECE.

Dr Anil Pahwa received the IEEE Power and Energy Society Technical Committee Distinguished Individual Service Award for “Dedication and service to IEEE PES and the Power Engineering Education Committee”. The award was presented at the IEEE PES General Meeting in Denver, CO in July 2015.
Kim Fowler Gives Instrumentation Tutorial in Malaysia
Kim Fowler spoke to a group of 16 colleagues and graduate students in Malaysia on Saturday, August 8th. He talked for two and a half hours on the basic principles of measurement and instrumentation and some practical applications for developing instruments.

Ms. Chang Liu was selected to present a poster titled “Average Achievable Throughput in D2D underlay cellular networks” based on her joint work with her adviser Dr. Bala Natarajan at the Simons conference on Networks and Stochastic Geometry, May 18-21, 2015, hosted by the Mathematics Department and WNCG, University of Texas Austin.
Faculty Spotlight
Dr. Behrooz Mirafzal, an Associate Professor of ECE department at KSU, received his PhD degree from Marquette University in 2005. From 2005 and 2008, he was with Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley, Mequon, WI, as a Senior Development/Project Engineer, where he was involved in research and development related to motor-drive systems.
IEEE Energy Center Tour
IEEE and the ECE dept. combined forces to go on a private tour of Westar Energy Jefferies Center. About 36 students from ECE Civil, mechanical, Bio agriculture attended, both graduate and undergraduate.
