Professional experience
Prior to coming to Kansas State University, Dr. Kump was Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department at State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College. He also worked as a data scientist and machine learning (ML) engineer at Arrow Slate, LLC in New York. Before earning his PhD, Dr. Kump was an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer for Sargent and Lundy LLC, in Chicago IL, where he specified and designed control systems for nuclear facilities and government research labs.
Research
Dr. Kump's research interests are in the areas of machine learning (ML), signal processing, and alterative teaching strategies. Dr. Kump has developed intelligent software-defined radio for the US Navy in electronic warfare, nuclear material detection algorithms for the US government at US seaports, and crime prediction software for The Chicago Police Department. He recently collaborated with Mount Sinai Hospitals to create smart software for automatic error detection in patient radiation therapy treatment plans. In his spare time, Dr. Kump works to combine his research with his love of electronic music performance, teaching machines the craft of songwriting.
Academic highlights
With extensive course and curriculum design experience, Dr. Kump is continuously committed to developing educational content that best prepares engineering students for the ever-changing demands of industry leaders. His teaching interests include online and HyFlex education, as well as classroom flipping and education research-based tasks. He created courses in ML and a corresponding collection of ML student project assignments published in American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), work that twice earned him Best Paper Award (2023, 2024). Dr. Kump earned certification in online teaching in 2016 from SUNY and subsequently taught over many massive online courses in computer programming and ML. He has been recognized by Open SUNY for excellence in online teaching and pioneered the School of Engineering’s online course offerings.
